The 2020 Covid-19 lockdown in South Africa was one of the most radical in the world, with extreme restrictions on personal life being imposed.
Except in conflict zones or under authoritarian regimes, rarely have individual freedom and liberty of movement been so affected as over the past 20 months during the pandemic.
For some time, sales of alcohol and cigarettes were illegal, family visits prohibited, travel forbidden, movement of citizens severely restricted, strict curfew enforced, work prioritised, sport activity controlled, … and the access to outdoors was banned.
Two worlds started to emerge: the heavily lockdown-regulated personal space, … and liberty somewhere on the horizon.
This is a photographic journey using my camera as a visual probe, positioning myself at the borderline between the two worlds of Covid-related restrictions on movement and the inspiration to access nature’s open spaces.
Those were forbidden horizons.
This exhibition depicts my personal experience during this lockdown period. It is an advocacy in favour of social responsibility and individual freedom.
